Glorious All-Reds 10/28
I ventured out to some of the sub 100' reefs off San Diego on Sunday, and
the vermillion rockfish were willing biters. So I've almost got these things wired and have got to perfect the style and technique before the closures on Jan 1. Experimentation. I released a number of fish including a 24" lingcod and some 2 lb reds. It was truly spectacular weather and felt empty out there - so I'll put up some visuals for those in landlocked, or colder climates. Glorious bright sunshine, 80 degrees, and not a gust of wind all morning! Almost November ...... Well, OK there is a Starry Rockfish in the mix.

DANA PT
If I launched at Dana and was forced to go fish for rockfish, I would paddle straight out two miles to 130' and look for bait balls near the bottom around this area: 33° 25.895' N 117° 41.770' W LOL - hope I'm not giving up anyone's secret spot, but there is no reason they should not be around there, feeding in the upwelling. Disclaimer: I just eyeballed that one on Google Earth in about 14 seconds, and have never fished there on a kayak. I typically target 120' into 170' deep with 4 to 8 ounces, drifting or slow trolling, depending on current. |

Video Up
A couple hours on Lake Pacific, finally finished the editing on this short
rockfish video, so thought I'd post .... to go along with my other 4 kayak rockfish videos : http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...EPIC102812.mp4 Would you believe that circle hooks and plastics can be mixed! The lingcod splashes my not-so-waterproof old Canon camera in this one .... ! |
