Surreal Scene - LJ - 8/31
Hit the beachhead at 0500 as usual - and saw more than the usual suspects. Looked like a mini tournament with the group lined up at the launch. Wondered why so many work ditchers here on an other wise normal Thursday? AH! Last day of the month. Look out boys the LAMB was armed and dangerous and looking to knock down a few today.
Bait was hit and miss at the pier. Worked hard North for a dozen and needed everyone to feed the homeless knotheads. Yellows were in their typical pattern of late - showing up at 60'-70' around 1/2 to 3/4 as I managed to farm a couple and release 3. In a desperate attempt to attract the big boys and bump Brad off the OEX Monthly Contest board - I rigged up with heavier leader, 3/0 hooks and the biggest baits I could muster. Dividends were slim as I got a lot of hit and spit quit a bit. Water, wind and weather was unusually calm making for a relaxing paddle. Enjoyed running into some old and new friends: This Legend (that means your old) stayed busy all morning: FnArne angled his first double and every time I turned my head he was busy with the Bendo. Then the entire surface erupted. Mini Cudas breaking and breezin' causing massive bird piles surrounding us like an ambush. No touches on the Tady or the baits. Guess they were chewing on a smaller meal. Did see a few yellows flying through the mix - but no takers. Ran outta bait and paddled into 30' by the cove and the Porno Spanish were blowing up in masses. Reloaded the bucket and headed back out to 70'. Found myself lonely as the rest of the fleet had drifted far SW with the current. Rolled back in around 11:30 and ran into the Corporate Malibu boys at the bouys. Hope that bait got converted into something good to eat. :?: Took my one keeper into the OEX store feeling sorry for the boys who had to work instead of play and got rewarded with fresh Yellowfin right off the Royal Polaris courteousy of the Captain. Thanks Skipper for the tuna - getting seared on the grill tonight. Adi was on fire. Beautiful berber carpet. FnArne was in typical form. Nice 20+ #ers Jim S got his client on fish. Great seeing Pat gunslinging the iron. Heard Nelz put his brah on the lamb too. Looks like quite a pregame show for the Tourney. Hope to see a few more HOGS roll into the zone by the 9th. Razor Out |

Surreal indeed Chris... 8)
Got to the beach in the dark. Overcast, but hey – it’s LJ. I met a girl once who said she lived the whole life in CA. She said the coldest town she ever lived in was La Jolla. Most of the year, the Sun comes out over LJ at 1:00 PM. Made it past the can at gray. No swell no wind to talk about. Warm and clear water. Thick bait close by, spanish and greenies. Lots of life. Picked up a nice sardine and fly-ed for a bonnie. Distraction, but worm up. Seemed pretty slow for everyone at first. I got lucky and got picked up inside before 7:00 AM. It was in about 70’, right outside all the crazy bait piles… Fought it nice and long, luckily didn’t seem to attract the attention of the dog that passed me by (thanks for the heads up Jim). It must be the dog didn’t have problem inhaling his breakfast – there was an abundance of bait. 21# lamb on board. Switched to halilamb attack mode – went a bit deeper bouncing Spanish, still flylining greenies (how could you not). Nothing for a while, then around 8:45 AM my bottom rig got slammed … I hardly yanked out the rod out of a holder… Heavy thing on… It felt like I was pulling commercial lobster trap with some headshakes. Lifted it up some than my main freakin' Powerpro spectra snapped someplace in mid column. Probably BSB, hear reports of it. Still, I would have appreciated an opportunity to meet him and greet him. Worked that area and got a right kind biter around 9:00AM. Easy transport to the surface, quick gaff, rope job, and pulling gills and all - 22# on the deck. Stoked. At 9:30 AM all hell broke loose. Birds diving all over, YT boiling like in the pot. Awesome, as good as it gets. Lots of bent rods and happy faces. Picked up 2 more rats and let them live. It was crazy for a good ½ hour in big area about 70' to 90', inside the NW cornet to ¾. That is at least that I know of - I paddled away as I had to be on land. Good seeing all the old guard, nice meeting new folks. One of those unforgettable days fishing LJ.

Thanks for the handoff Provancha. Found some bird piles first thing and nailed a bonie on the iron. The big wigs took off early and I ended up fishing till dark when MKNOTT and Brad showed up. Got a 10lb yellow in 65ft at about 3/4. One more clicker pull and drop in the same zone and that was about it.

Nice fish Adi - I took some pics of a few bendos (Avery, Nelz' buddy, etc.) but probably should have got one of your smile as you paddled by. That smile was bigger than your butt
Good luck on the new gig Chris! Your gonna have to (get to) join the pm/weekend contingent now. Arne
