As hard as I try, I can't bring myself to halibut fish in La Jolla. I wanted to noodle around the pier and then head north to pound sand, but a 3 pack of 20#+ fish breezing south at grey light made up my mind to follow them.
Scored this guy on the deadstcked iron while fighting a bait fish which was lost to the kelp forest---it felt like a bigger fish too Guessing around 13# or so. After getting the jig fish to gaff, my other bait rig went off, but I had a spectra tangle wrapped up in the jig fish, and it quickly pulled tight and snapped the knot. Crazy almost triple hookup. All this action came in about 70 feet of water "straight off the condo" Current was much lighter than last night too. |

Thanks for the greenbacks
1st bait went to the dogs. 2nd bait hooked something big that kelped
me. Leader broke. 3rd pulled in a nice firecracker. As it turned out, there was bait boils everywhere, easy to make. The yellows and bonitas started to hit almoast every bait. No wind or swell made for a nice day of fishing. I farmed some bigger moldels. Ive got to move up in line size. I ended up keeping 5 small yellows and a bonita. Its nice to give fresh fish for presents. I released a few yellows, calicos, cudas, and of course bonitas. A great day of fishing |
