Sail option...

Anyone using the sail option to get out or back quicker? I have seen some video's where the aussy folks seem to be using the option successfully

I've fished in the bay from a sailing kayak. It was definately fast but fishing around the sail, amas, and rigging lines was awkward.I think it would be doable if you seperated the sailing from the fishing. Maybe paddle/peddle out before the wind came up with the sail furled and tied to the kayak. Then after you get your fishing done get the sail up and get a mostly free ride back to the launch. I have access to an adventure island and want to try this. You can also stand up and sorta lean/ wrap your leg around the mast and fire some nice casts. Mike

I have only seen one kayak in play with a sail since I have been fishing out of Dana Point Harbor...and he wasn't fishing...the back stay would be the only thing I can see in the way from a fishing perspective...

2-HP outboard for $60

There was a 2-HP outboard on Craig's list today for $60. I bet that is cheaper and lighter (20-lbs) than a sail. It might not plane your kayak but you probably would make 8-knots into the current and wind. Just a thought.
