Newport, 10-11-10
Launched from the peninsula around 5:15am back in about 9am. Conditions left much to be desired; 10-15kt south wind and chilly. But, the worst was the red tide. Stepping in the wet sand actually made the sand light up around my feet. It was pretty, but it also meant bad fishing until the sun rose. Admittedly the glow made for beautiful paddling as every stroke was lit up and I could watch the bait get chased around by the bigger fish. Water was about 66º.
I started out trying the few docks that had any kind of light, but only got one bite in 30min. Moved out to jetty by the wedge and took advantage of the street lights to hide the glow of my line. Even deadsticking left my line looking like something out of Tron. Manage a legal and a short sand bass on a watermelon/red flake Baby Brushhog. Once the sun was up enough to hide the glow in the water I hit the docks again, but I found nothing. Moved out to mid-channel and pulled my best of the day, a 2lb sandie that bit a Hyspin w/a 3" Flurry (gold chovy). Tried some more docks for nothing and moved to the moored boats. Eventually the bite picked up a bit around the boats. The fish liked my chart/white Markey Underspin with a 3" gums Flurry. Pulled a legal sandie and some short spotties until I managed to lose the bait to some structure. Switched to straight 3" Flurries. Chart/fire avocado was the ticket for more shorts. Hyspin just yielded a few bumps. Eventually, the 3hrs sleep caught up with me and decided to call it quits. Glad I went, but could've been much better.
