Anybody using spinning gear for rockfish?

I have a 4000 size Cabelas salt striker reel that I matched up to a Lamiglas Excel II. Gave it a try in the bay and I liked the action on the rod. Anyone else use lighter spinning gear for the Deep Fish?

On a trip to Bahia de los Angeles I used spinning gear to catch cortez sculpin and bronze spotted bass. Not sure how deep we were fishing but it was at least 100'. Similar to our rock fishing. 40lb braid with a short mono leader. Worked fine. Mike

Very minimal reel seat. Incredibly sensitive with a good backbone and fast action.
Oh, it's a pretty blue to boot.
