Leo Carillo Over Labor Day
I'm going camping with the family at Leo Carillo over labor day. Will probably bring the kayak and sonar, I'm thinking no live bait tank just to keep it simpler.
I will probably just rig up for bottom fishing to keep it simple. Will probably use some type of jig or swimbait and/or dropper loop squid strips. I've read a couple of earlier posts on the subject, but would be interested in any tips specific to this time of year. Here are the questions: Best Jigs? North or south from the campground? How far? Water depth this time of year? What is with the 805 reference in the other posts on this? Secret handshake society? If any of you gents will be out that weekend maybe I'll see you out there. Thanks, Tom |

You will have a great time, as long as the launch is doable, lots o rocks,
there is a spot usually alittle south of the staircase...outside the kelp line the lings lurk, I got one there about this time last year at about 40 inches I generally use hammer in browns but I am sure iron will do well too....good luck out there 805 area code water depth 30-50 south 1-5 miles Last edited by mtnbykr2; 08-18-2011 at 08:35 AM. |

Lots of good fishing up that way. Bouncing swimbaits on the bottom will work well. I'd recommend warbaits or other weedless type baits though since there are lots of hangups. Another really productive method I've been using a lot lately is a drop shot with a 5" jerkshad/fluke. Rockfish love it and you'll also catch lings, bass and halis with it. Make sure you have the bait rigged weedless and drop it right in the holes in the kelp.
The wind usually blows out of the north, so I usually paddle north and fish my way back with the wind. Hit me up with any other questions or if you need someone to fish with. Hopefully the water warms up a bit. My FF was reading 62-64 all day yesterday. Good luck! |
