The reward...
We finally made it out, after a 2 month lull. From what we gathered from almost non-existent timely reports is the WSB have slowed down off of La Jolla, even at night where the bite has been good, from what we read between the lines.
Launched at 4:15AM. We’ve seen 2-3 foot waves, but when we commit for the run past the breakers a sneaky 4 foot wave came at us, easily the biggest we’ve seen since arriving at the beach. I barely cleared the wave, Julie wasn't as lucky. Pushed back, then sideways, and then flipping she lost some gear, but none of the expensive stuff. She flipped her kayak back over, remounted and made it clear of the waves. Many men would have bailed the trip after the flip, or waited until sunrise. But not my hard-trying fisher-gal, she just got back on the horse(‘yak) that tossed her. We made a few squirts (live squid) around 5:00AM, then bought some from a boat a few minutes later. Just about 6:00AM Julie hooked and landed her reward for being hard-core. It was only the 2nd fish we knew of caught that morning, so it's definitely not wide open. The boat we bought squid from had the other fish, he had a double going but one came unbuttoned. We only saw 1 other hookup with 50 ocean crafts out on the water. The on the water shot: The beach shot: We followed this trip up with another on the morning of the 4th. We didn’t see any hookups of the right kind, and there were only about 20 ocean crafts on the water, in our area. Around 10:00AM we tried bottom fishing with strips of squid and did manage to catch 5 nice rockcod. So, at least we had enough for fish tacos for a couple of dinners. The weather was outstanding both days, especially on the 4th. And the dolphins put on quite the show. If you zoom in you can see one dolphin completely airborne between the 2 kayaks.
