Sabiki help
Had my kayak for a few months now and could use some info on using a sabiki rig in Mission Bay to catch bait. What size hook package would you recommend, Is there a preference of rods to use do you use a bobber and do you attract the smelt with a canned tuna/catfood or what do you recommend ? Thanks for your help guys.............

I've been using size 16 hooks as of late and they have been working very well for me. Seems to work pretty good for the small and big stuff. No bobber, no cat food no bread crumbs....Every school doesn't bite, watch your fishfinder for schools of bait and drop on them, if it doesn't bite move on to the next one and find one that does.

Tony's right...........just a few weekends ago we were out and starting scanning around for bait.
1st school of bait..........nada, not even a nibble 2nd school of bait..........they must have been related to the first school of bait 3rd school of bait...........picked one up and just as quick as i was able to dehook it the school was gone. We ended up making enough bait to get us through the day but it was tuff to get it. One suggestion I can make is to troll the sabiki a few yard back behind while you're looking for the schools. Every so often you'll snag a loner, do that a few times and before you know it you'll have enough bait to start fishing. Personally, I don't wait until I have a ton of bait, my first two baits get pinned on and I start fishing right where the schools are, you'd be surprised how often I've gotten hit when I did that.

It took me almost a year to get this info from you and now you're giving it up to a Dead Dog named Doug just like a cheap hor walking Rosecrans Avenue would...whatever.

That was payback for all those San Diego trips to your 'secret spot' that produced nothing crap.............you member? Now you're complaining? Just last week you thanked me for giving that same bait making advise. The text read, "Jorge, I can't thank you enough for your advise, your bait making knowledge is second to none......I am greatful for the information you have given me, I hope that someday I will be just like you". It goes on and on and you even mentioned something about shedding a tear or two. Anyway, how did that LJ November WSB taste?

I sometimes bring a baggy of old bread crumbs, tortillas etc. On calmer days or on days with mellow current u can throw out a handful or two and keep the smelt school around a bit longer. This doesn't always work but it has for me more than once
