Spanish Landing 11/26/17

Decided to venture into the northern end of the bay as I usually fish the southern end. Decided to launch from Spanish Landing at 8:30AM as it was easy (didn't like the $4 and 4 hour limit though). Spent the first couple of hours cruising through harbor and shelter island with no luck on the plastics. Had more luck trolling a Yo-zuri Tobimaru the final two hours. Final fish count was 3 Pacific Mackerels and 1 smaller Bonito. I treated that bonito right (gilled, bled, on ice) and had an excellent spicy mayo poke plate last night.

Next time maybe I'll have a line set up to fly line the greenback. I felt weird just tossing it back knowing how at times it so hard for people to find bait.

Question: I know people do this out in La Jolla all the time looking for Yellowtail and WSB, but what might you hook up on in the northern end of the Bay, or towards the mouth leading to the ocean? I'm thinking if one were to drop it down to the bottom you might get a Halibut? Any feedback would be appreciated.

If you want to hit the north bay up and you don't want to pay for the parking hit this link up....

You should be able to park along San Antonio Ave for free and can launch off the beach there with zero issues.

Thanks for that! I had heard of Kellogg’s beach but didn’t know where it was at. Much appreciated!

Anyone flyline macks in the bay? I know that’s bread and butter for La Jolla, but what about in the bay?

Can definitely find some big halibut, bat rays on the bottom. I’ve seen barracuda in the summer, and there’s some big sand bass and calico that hangout. Not to mention shovelnose sharks and whatever might be cruising around at any given moment.

Send the Bonito down and see what happens.... might get v'exciting, v'fast

otherwise you'll never know, people do well especially on halibut in the bays with anything from plastics, crankbaits, chovies, sardines and macs.... maybe small bones never know!

*spicy mayo poke looks good!

Flylining bay

I have had a little success doing that in the bay this year but compared to plastics or bottom action it has been slow for me. 7-8 trips dragging macs, caught a 5' shark and a few random bass that take 8-10" Macs, oh and 1 boat with several other close calls with ignorant boaters. Just be very careful boats pay 0 attention on the north side and are very ok motoring up to within feet of you.
Good Luck!
