Need your opinions on mounting kayak to mustang (2007) - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

I'm looking at getting into Kayaking and have been scouting out different Kayaks, but I cant seal the deal because I only have a mustang to Transport it with. Think its possible to but a big Yak ontop? Any Tips on how to do so? Its a two door so it makes it seem a little difficult.

That should work if you want it to be removable when not transporting the kayak. We sell the Ready Rack as well by Crack of Dawn for $69

Why not get one of the the vertical T-Bar types that fit into a square receiver on a tow hitch. Then one Yakima or Thule rack on the roof.

I've use this rack before. Great and very portable. The downside is you have to be careful of the pressure you put on it when tying down. Mine eventually had a small air leak. I would stay away from these and go with a solid setup since on the way to the water it's good to go then at the end of the day it doesn't hold air your roof will get damaged.

But then my kayak is a mini-x...

dnt go cheap on a rack! I was worried about puting my outback on my 4dr civic but I put some yakima racks on it and its impressive how sturdy they are. Have no problem drivin 80+ with the yak on top

⬆ I second that. I have yakima racks and can carry two malibu xfactors on my camry and go on long road trips. Def worth spending the money if u can.

Hmm the Yakima rack only provides 18" of bar spread, not rated to carry a kayak. Unless i buy the extender kit, total of over $500 ='(

I really liked the Tbar Hitch set up but my mustang doesn't have a hitch. so thats atleast $400 for hitch a tbar.

How about just the simple foam blocks set up?

The extender kit you mentioned is the Q stretch kit, which sells for $60 on ebay. Thule or Yakima sells these extension kits. Research yakima.com or thule.com, find what length cross bars and clips you need. Craigslist search, ebay search for used sets. The used kits will run you around $150-$275. The link i provided earlier has a guy selling the cross bars and towers for $150, all you need is the correct clips and the extender kit.

The simple foam blocks works but its going to be a bit hard to unload/load the kayak if you're doing it by yourself (without scratching your car's roof).

Hope this helps you decide. I say buy the kayak first so it will motivate you to get the roof rack.

Using any foam or air pads that sit on the roof are going to be a big risk of scratching or scuffing the paint finish due to dust, dirt or sand getting between the pad and the paint. The better option is to get a rack that mount to the body at door openings or gutters. Also the pads might put pressure on the roof that could dent in the center area of the roof. Body or paint damage would lower the value of the car or cost more to repair than buying a rack that can better support the weight.

im using foam blocks and they work great for my car but i use my ezwheels to load my kayak. you'd be better off getting a real rack but if you want something in the mean time to work and for cheap

I have a Malibu Stealth 12 on top of a compact Ford myself.

I purchased my Thule rack setup at ORS Racks. I bought the most expensive items when they popped in the "returns section" for about 1/2 price. You can use the Thule website to see what fits your car. If Thule is a bit over budget I found the Inno branded racks to be of very good quality and found them to be equal if not better than the Yakima IMHO.

When loading on the back of the car I use a shower mat on the rear of the hatchback to rest the bow of the boat with part of the mat covering the roof and the other part covering the rear windshield. I then move to the rear and push the boat up onto the rack. The shower mat has on old yoga mat folded over about four times and zip-tied to the shower mat to provide some extra protection between the hull of the kayak and the car.

I recommend the Thule 883 Glide and Set Kayak Rack for loading solo. Using J-bars would be almost impossible to do solo. I picked up the Thule 883 for about $100 on Ebay.

This setup has been rock solid. I personally wouldn't trust loading solo onto the roof without a solid rack. There is a risk of damage to the kayak if it slides of the roof when loading as well as damage to the roof itself when strapping the kayak down to make sure its secure. For about $400 you can avoid damage to your vehicle, kayak or another party by installing a roof rack.

Personally if I had the storage space I would use a Marlone Sport Trailer or Yakima Rack and Roll but I lack the ability to store it.
