VHF radios are most commonly used outdoors or on the water.
I myself just purchased an Icom VHF M88 radio. Standard Horizon is another popular brand. |

Buy a used one if you can and please make sure you add a leash to it.

I second the leash thing and for added protection get a dry bag for it. If there is a way for water to get into your radio, it will get in. I bought a cobra from Bass Pro Shops for like $50 and it works great and is small.

Do yourself a favor. Find out what West Marine carries that is waterproof and possibly floats. Price shop the unit on the internet, and take the price printout to WM. Then purchase the radio with the 3yr extended warranty. You will not regret it. Saltwater kayak fishing is brutal on nearly all electronics. As with anything else on your yak, if it does not float you better leash it.

I use a Cobra HH330 Floating VHF radio. I got mine for about $129.00.
