removable rod holders?
I'll be renting a yak on vacation and may do some trolling and or jigging. Would prefer not to hold rod in lap. I thought of a seat w/ an attached rod holder but would prefer not to take that. Does anyone know of removable rod holders to temporarily mount on a yak? Thanks in advance for 411.

2 ideas come to mind
1. $5... Bring a couple 8" long Black PVC pipes, zip ties and a bungee. When you get wherever you are going (assuming you're fliying...?), go to the loading dock of a store and "borrow" a milk crate. Zip tie the PVC "rod holders" to the corners of the milk crate, and bungee the whole operation to the kayak through the back scuppers.... Just use it for gear / rod storage or fly lining out of gear with the clicker on... if it holds tight. Don't forget to return the milk crate for good karma. 2. These might be able to be shoved into the scupper holes... just don't let the rental company see it, cause you could potentially "damage" the scuppers. If you fish it in gear go VERY light on the drag.... and don't do it on your own kayak. I'd go with #1 over the seat with rod holders idea. I'm sure DSafety and others will debate ... but I'm a risk taker and enjoy it.

Without knowing what kind of a kayak you will be renting, it is difficult to know what kind of "tie down" options you have at your disposal. If you you could somehow attach a piece of wood that spans the yak from side to side, you could drill some holes in the wood large enough to accommodate pieces of 1.5" ABS pipe. Drill vertical holes for rod storage and angled holes for trolling.
Insert pieces of PVC into the holes, strap the piece of wood to the kayak and go fishing. You could make the device at home and break it down so it easily fits in your luggage. Figuring out how to attach it to the rental will be the hard part. Bob |

Seat mounted rod holders are a poor option. The rods rest against your back and the seats are bulky. RAM has a suction cup mount - it's best suited to sit-insides are for electronics.
I travel for kayak fishing a fair amount, setting up shop on borrowed boats that aren't fully rigged. I use my modified Plano marine box. A cheap plastic 2 rod rack is bolted to the back, angled aft. A couple of tie downs completes the kit. The box fits in a suitcase add doesn't add much weight. |
