**Need advise on an all around extreme kayak/Big flounder pics**
Hello Experienced Extreme Yakers out there!
Can you give me at least 3 kayak makes/models you would recommend out in open ocean? I would like to kayak fish various oil rigs near the shores along the Gulf of Mexico. Yeah-Yeah, I know I'll be fishing in black gold but I still think I'll catch a fish or two. I would hope to catch some really large fish while I am out there. I am searching online but I would like advise from some one who has a great fishing open water kayak they use and has caught some large fish from them with out fear of tipping. Help in narrowing in on 3 makes/models would be great guys/gals... Before I head out to the big open ocean I will try it in local fresh water for some huge alligator gar. I have a few holes down here in Texas. *Attached are some recent flounder that I gigged this past week while wading the bays out in Galveston,TX. All keepers... 18 inchers & a big 23 incher..."Great fun!" Regards, EEK Last edited by Earth's End Kayaker; 09-28-2010 at 10:45 PM. |

Nice Flounders! Big pigs!
If you got a Malibu Dealer out there, and im sure you do. Look into a Malibu Extreme, or Malibu Xfactor. good kayaks for stability and get a good grade for Seaworthiness. If you got yourself a pretty penny, look into a Hobie! They are all popular choices out here on the West Coast! They got AJ on those Rigs... alot like our Yellowtail out here. But the Verticle Jig kills it out there! |

Check out the Cobra Marauder. It is super fast, handles great in big seas and small chop. It also has plenty of large scupper holes to get rid of the water in a hurry including 2 under the seat to keep you dry.
Plenty of room to store rods inside and the new ones come with a bait tank in front and a rudder. http://www.cobrakayaks.com/ To see it in action... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZvoOR3cpoc Good luck! |

I used to have a Wilderness Tarpon 16, which was super seaworthy and has the most comfortable seat out there. I now have a hobie adventure, equally seaworthy, peddles extremely well, doesn't paddle as well as the wilderness did.

Wilderness Systems
Try out a Wilderness systems tarpon 160. Great Kayak, fast like a Hobie Revolution mirage drive. Great in shallow water (Can't do that with pedals).

Thanks for all the great advise! I will do my research on all the models/brands mentioned before I pull the plug. I respect all you dudes and dudets for your great advise. I will let you know what kayak I get and show you my first big catches on it here real soon. "Great pictures Aquatic Hunter!" Did you get that flounder on live or artificial? Whats the biggest or meanest fighting fish you taken in your current kayak, and is the Cobra Maz. the one your using currently? Thanks again! |

I have both a Hobie Revo and Hobie Pro Angler. I've had the Tarpon 160i and Malibue X-Factor, both of which are good yaks. I just prefer to peddle and not paddle. With the Hobie, currents, wind, and distance traveled are not nearly as much of a factor as in the traditional yaks. This is probably going to start another shit storm again....but thats just my .02 cents.

The halibut picture was from last Saturday so yeah, I use it currently. Live bait BTW. The biggest fish is that thresher shark that measured 10'-7". I don't know what it weighed but guessing about 175#. The Marauder is 14+ ft long and 31" wide which makes for a steady but fast platform. During one the Baytubers tournaments I competed in 20+ guys were lined up at the starting line for a 1 mile sprint to the bait barge. I came in 2nd place in the "race" mainly because I wanted to follow someone since I wasn't sure where it was. Not my ability, it's just a very fast boat.
