4/30 Slow
Fished 9 am - 6:30 pm shift today. Very slow, "no bites".
Started at the yellow cans - no bait there so headed to the pier - no bait there with gross rootbeer water, so, trolled lures all the way to the way outside corner in 200' where a bunch of pelicans were diving. Red-tide water out to about 180', where it cleaned up a little. Tried for rockfish and lings too.. Nada. Caught a few big mackerel in 180' on the bottom around noon. There were birds still working the area, some tight balls of smelt and other stuff? with fish marks in them, but no biters on the big macks for 2 hours of trolling around. Decided to fish for halibut up north, and ran across some huge areas of greenback and spanish schools around 180' on the bottom heading into the canyon. Loaded the bait tank, 4 at a time. Trolled back  to Blacks beach by 2 pm and dragged the bottom for 2 hours with macks, and threw plastic for nada. On the way in at Scripps pier area, I could see a huge cloud of birds working the point out past the yellow can. Cruised all the way back  out there by 5:30 pm and the birds were scattered by then but still lookin', so I soaked a couple macks for the sunset non-bite. Really dead out there. Saw nothing caught. I was busy rockin to Jack-FM most of the day so whatever .... good excercise!

I know Im new to this type of fishing, but I never have any problem finding bait in the kelp. I just find a kelp stinger and drop my sabiki right next to it. the macks are from about 15" to the surface. Maybe I'm just ignorant and lucky though :?
