Saturday LJ Thresher
Today was one of those days on the water, so nice you just don't want to leave. Not much catching of fish going on though. I did get a nice ling in the kelp on a carolina rigged mackerel.
The highlight of the day was when Rick hooked up a pretty big thresher for a catch and release battle. The shark was pushing 150 poounds and pretty much thought it was the baddest beast in the water. It fought and tugged and pulled and whacked its tail around, but to no avail. Rick fought it for a good 40 minutes. At the end of the battle, way out to sea where the shark had dragged him, he swings the head around the tail of the yak, stick his little pliers right up next to those teeth and yanks out the iron. Perfect! The shark swam away with a little sore on his mouth and major damage to his ego, but at least he's alive. Last edited by TCS; 03-20-2010 at 04:59 PM. |

Nice Job on the Ling
Congrats on the Ling, I thought the season on them was still closed. I have yet to catch one of those guys off the yak.

Yes, you're right. Lingcod season opens April 1st. Good thing I didn't keep it.

Yeah, good thing, we may have been confused because until you edited it out, you had "Dinner!" right after the ling statement. You can see how we might misconstrue the intent. Glad you released him, if you didn't, you might have thrown the entire ecosystem out of whack....those 2 weeks are REALLY important.

Most good fish stories have the occasional inaccuracy. Omiting stupidity or exagerating heroics are all standard procedure as far as I can tell.
Stupidity in my case. A little luck too. |

Same yesterday. Tons of bait and some Thresher around. Hooked and lost one maybe two. Never saw the 1st fish but the 60 spectra broke. Fun brief encounters.
At least you were out looking. |
