La Jolla 10/10 with a little surprise to end the day
Launched at 615am, made bait at the pier at paddled to the point. Got nailed before I even hit the condo with 5-6lb bonito, sure nice to hear a screaming reel again. Paddled around the point and back, dogs got a couple of baits and the bonies got a couple more. Finally figured out that you gotta let the bones actually take your bait, not just hit it a couple of times. So I'm back to the spot of the first bonito and the reel goes off, this time it's a bigger bonito probably in the 8-9lb range, but before I get it to the surface here comes......
Takes the tail clean off...Love this pic because it looks like a large model white, but in actuality it's a 3-4 foot juvenile mako. Anyways, I wasn't going to keep the bonito so I let the mako have it's way with it and snapped a few shots. It was a pretty cool sight to say the least. I even waved over Gabriel (nice to meet you) to check it out. Well, here's the rest of the pix. |

Great photos! On sunday my buddy and I caught a mako exactly like that one. While we were unhooking it, all i could think about was mommy coming to protect her baby
Very beautiful shark in person and strong too. Our mako bit my buddies kayak as well. Ill post some pics when we load them. Last edited by Geoffkoop; 10-12-2009 at 04:41 PM. |

I never thought about the family members being around. The mako gnawed on the fish for maybe 15 minutes. When Gabriel came over to check out the scene, the mako gnawed on his kayak...aggressive little one. And by the way, for what ever it's worth, during the trauma of getting eatin' tail first, the bonito was hacking up squid. All photos were taken with the iPhone, too.

Awesome photos!!!! That was a baby Mako? Don't they stay near their mom's till they're bigger?? Is this the season for Mako's? If so, then I can see why guys are putting their fishing gear and yaks up for winter.

My buddy and I hooked and released a small Mako on Sunday off his boat in L.J.
It could not of been any bigger than 3ft long. VERY COOL!! Makos are also known as Bonita Sharks |
