Q105 2.5 day
I went out on the Qualifier 105 last weekend for a 2.5 day. It was a pretty cool trip. They took over two skiffs which the skiff fishers fished off of, a bunch of kayakers and some private boaters met us over there and used the boat as a hotel. We left the harbor a little after nine AM and were on our way to San Clemente Island. After what felt like forever we reached the island around four and the crew started unloading kayaks. We anchored in pyramid cove and fished there the whole time. I dragged a sardine along the bottom was rewarded with a flattie.
The next morning the crew had us out early and I caught a big bonito on the surface iron. I also got my first yellowtail of the year a little firecracker off of a droper looped sardine. I dropped another sardine down and caught the biggest batray i had ever seen. I must have faught that thing for an hour on thirty pound before getting it to color and cutting it off. After that it was lunch time. The afternoon had some wind but it was not to bad. I dragged a sardine around for a couple raked baits and another bonito off of the iron. On the last morning of the trip, we had to head in around 9:30 to get back to san diego in the afternoon. Knowing we did not have a ton of time to fish I left the bait behind and headed for the same spot I caught my yellowtail the day before. This time armed with some irons. I metered some squid and yo yoed a iron. I hooked up a nice yellow pretty quickly on thirty pound test and lost it on the bottom. Like an idiot I only brought one heavy iron. I tied on the only other iron I had a blue and white tady 45, paddled to the same spot and let out a cast, as it was sinking it got nailed. I put it in gear and the fight began. I forgot how hard these guys pull. A little later I gaffed my personal best yellowtail and my first off the iron. It wieghed just under thirty pounds on the boat. The crew and food were great and some nice fish were caught. We had great weather as there was almost no swell and not that windy. There were about ten yellows caught up to 36 pounds, one flattie, lots of bass and bonito for the boat. |
