Islander fun
It's that time of year again...
to get on a mothership and fish some new waters... Brother Ron giving me the thumbs up whilst my bait tank was a fillin'... as usual, the Islander food and crew spoiled us... at times my belly hurt from being stuffed with all the good food... not that I'm complaining or anything... Mark and Rob enjoying... Rob hunting... the weather Saturday was in our favor...swell was a little bigger than I like for boiler fishin' so it made the usual boiler rock fishing questionalbe on the safety factor... the morning bite on the calicos was down deep... I was Mr. 3 3/4lber.... just could not break the 4 lb mark... unfortunately for me...Mr Pierpont thru a 6" swimmy that nailed this 5 lber which meant he got my Fi Dolla for Saturday...(I tried Rhino)... the fight... the Fi' poun' Fi' Dolla fish...(damn it).... the deep action started to slow down... I had my jig stick handy with a Tady 45 on it and and proceeded to practice some casting...not really expecting to get slammed... what a surprise...my first official surface iron calico... this fish makes that Tady 45 look small... there were more... surface iron is the chit...so much fun...untill... Rob was fartin' around throwin' one of those big ass MC slugs... he was finished with his cast...the friggin lure was 24" out of the water and this monster jumps out of the water and bites it... we were in disbelief... Rob quickly drops it down and gets hammerd... we were...(as Mark put it)...giggling like school girls... laughing our arses off...those MC slugs are soooooo much fun... we spent the next couple hours getting bit on surface irons and MC slugs...what a blast... We fished the calicos 'till lunch... I spent the rest of the day in seach of the yellers...none to be found...one guy got a WSB off the boat in the evening...but no yellers this trip... Sunday the winds were up...my plan was to throw the MC in the kelp, but I pinned on a sardine as I made my way to the kelp... and I ended up having my game plan for the day changed for me... a nice fat 10lb 28" halibut changed my plan... I then spent the next 6 hours pounding the sand...for not... the highlight of the day for me was getting slammed by a T shark on a blue and white yo yo iron...did the air show and busted off... one calico and one halibut was my fish count for Sunday... Dave was the JP winner this time... 31# WSB...nice Dave!!! the carnage looks bigger here!!!! good night.... another fine trip....can't wait for the next one.... |

Pretty sick photos, Josh!
I'm really surprised you haven't put a Trini on that bad a$$ jig-stick, though. She's too pretty for a Newell .

this is what I go to SCI for
those bass there are big, thick, strong, and mean as hell. gotta get right up into the shore, right in close to the island and fish tight to the ledges to get them. it's intense fishing. it's like a game of chicken. you pull the bass out before he pulls you into the island. sometimes you win sometimes they do afterwards, you grab a cold one |

Great Trip as per usual, great crew, and very cool anglers on this trip!
I spent 80% of my time diving. Saw a calico that must have been 10lbs. Didn't shoot it. Some dive pics. Unfortunately my dive camera was set on low megapixel... The Islander Zodiak was able to take us and drop us off at beaches, and we worked our way back to the boat. But they also, anchored right near kelp, and other structure, we were able to just go off the swim step in most cases. Vincent, a diver and kayak fishermen, who brought a bunch of tasty pastries for everyone, searching for halibut on the front side. Thanks again Vincent! The front side would offer sand flats, or reefs, then just drop into blue abyss... Saw lots of bugs, too bad it isnt Oct yet! Had a huge bait ball nervous, you could hear the swoosh sound underwater... At one point, they shot right past me. I thought, "oh sh*t, here comes something!" nope, A BIG DOG, out of the abyss. Got the heart pounding. Pretty cool bunch of reefs on the front side. Pete below searching for fish. Some kayak fishermen had some luck! Also, many reported plenty of C&R calicos to 7lbs. The search continues! Home sweet home.... There are still some trips available via OEX kayak and Dive shop, the Islander is great trip, check them out!
