La Jolla 5-9
Easy launch this AM with smaller than expected surf due to the low tide. Made it out dry and went out and loaded up on bait. Trolled one high and one low throughout the morning for nada.....only action was from a couple sea lions who stole the bait... Caught and released a Calico on a scrambled egg iron....gave up on the thought of catching yellowtail for the day and dropped one frozen squid to the bottom in hopes for some taco meat. At the same time a large pod of dolphins, sea lions and birds began to show up on the outside and so I decided to pursue to see if there were any signs of yellowtail. There was at least a couple hundered dolphins chasing fish, jumping out the water, and buzzing by the kayak. Ended up in 165 feet of water and began to head back to the regular grounds and saw some surface action which I thought was YT chasing bait. Threw the surface iron twice for nada and then paddled through the area with a mackeral down low....nada....until suddenly my line was getting torn out of my reel....sweet! Grabbed on and this time it didn't feel like a sea lion. After removing a large piece of kelp from the line and adjusting my telescoping gaff while fighting the fish I was fortunate enough to land my first decent size YT....21lbs and 41 inches.....super stoked and can't wait to get back out there. No camera with me and so took some pics when I got home

Time on the water...
It's about freakin' time, Tom .
I've watched you hit it pretty hard most of the colder months and it was bound to happen sooner or later. I bet the blood was flowing, first in your chest and then on deck.

Way to go man! Can't wait to get back out there and do it again! I was so happy one of us caught something that day. I got a small calico on the BW salas after you left but that was it for me.
