Need help, from Hobie Outback owners...
Hi Ya'll,
I have been given the opportunity to buy a 4 year old Hobie Outback. It is clean. Very few scratches on the bottom. Comes with everything including a custom rail for a trolling motor and wheels for only $600. The hull looks clean inside and out. My question is this, is there anything I should be worried about or anything that I should inspect before I make the purchase? I've never owned a Hobie before. Has anyone experienced failure in the peddle drive? How much the peddle unit to replace? Thanks, SamFisher |

That sounds like a hell of a deal
Inspect the drive well (the area the mirage drive plugs into) This has been a failure point on that era Outback. Check for little cracks. The boat is no longer covered by the factory warranty, so be very thorough. Failure in the pedal drive in uncommon provided you take decent care of them. Rinse them off after every use. Look for rust at the connection points of the cables on the drives. As far as replacing the mirage drive, you can usually just replace the specific parts and save some cash. But if you have to replace the entire unit.....its about $460 for a new one. But like I said, $600 sounds like a steal, most go for over $1000 I'm not sure where you live or where the boat is located, but you are more than welcome to bring it by the shop and I'll take a look at it and give you my honest opinion.

Read my post about the 2006 Adventure. The same applies to the Outback of that era.
Check the Drive Well Area for any cracks. http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwevb/s...ead.php?t=4893 |

One thing i dont like about that year is that the new custom Hobie bait tank does not fit back there. (The cooler insert gets in the way of that) So youll have to build this yourself. I say you buy for $600 and flip it on craigslist for $900

I am probably going to buy the kayak. As mentioned above by DENNYh, I can always resell it for more. SamFisher |
