Kayak Shark Attack Knocks Angler in Water

Happy Easter Everyone!

A Divorce is keeping me off the water, but my buddy was having a pretty good day -- at first light a Wahoo, then a nice King Mackerel.

But then around 10am off Boca Raton, Florida in 200ft of water while he was putting out a live bait to troll, his kayak got nudged. He didn't see what nudged him, but in the next instance, his kayak was hit so hard, that it flipped. He did not get a good look at it, but it was a greyish shark.

The next few minutes in the water expecting the shark to return were some of the scariest of his life!

The shark did not return. His closeby buddy allowed him to climb on the back of his kayak until they were able to flip his kayak upright.

The day went from good to horrible as my buddy lost 5 fishing outfits and a Gopro camera that was on, and might have otherwise had some viral video of the shark hit.

His outback Kayak had some teeth marks, one of which punctured all the way through and slowly leaked water as he headed back to the beach.

Having been attacked 4 times on the kayak by Hammerheads, this shark did not stay on the surface like Hammerheads normally do. The other most aggressive shark in this area is a Bull Shark, but bulls are brown in color.

This attack is very similar to the many off California by Great White Sharks.
But a group of us have been fishing this area for many years, and never seen a Great White.

Then one buddy did a check on the Shark Tracker App, and Guess what!

It looks like the 12ft 4" 1200lb male Great White Shark named IRONBOUND happened to be off Boca Raton today.

LOL .. I think I am going to load that app on my phone for future reference.

Wow...

Maybe the shark had a mouth full of wahoo and king mackerel, sorry for both of your losses.
Definitely a scary moment. At least everyone made it in safe. The attack sounds like a great white mistaken identity the way it swam off. That's some hardcore kayak fishing right there. Thanks for sharing.

Financial losses are short term, or they don't Last a lifetime.

Back in the Saddle Again

The buddy who got attacked by the shark patched the holes in his kayak, scrounged up some rods, bought a new GoPro, and went out and did it again... That is he caught another Wahoo.

The only kayak angler that I know of to catch 2 Wahoo in two consecutive fishing trips. Running steadily with a silent torqeedo motor is ideal for Wahoo.
