Those are nice rods for a kayak. The pool noodles from the dollar store are another option, but I prefer leashes.

I'm sure it would last longer than pipe insulation.
I made all my leashes. I put a lead crip on plastic coated wire leader and made a silver dollar size ring and put that on my reels under the reel seat. Then just used 1/4 rope and brass lobster clips. Never lost a rod knock on wood Quick and easy to unleash
