Yellowfin Fishing???

I'm up in Nor Cal and looking to plan a trip south this year to fish Yellow Tail. I got one out at Santa Cruz Island a few years ago (pic). I know you can get them inshore in the SD area? Would really love info!
When is best time/season?
Recommended areas? Launch sites?
Fishing methods, etc? (last one was on scramble eggs surface iron)
Thanks for any/all contributions!

Anywhere where you can get off shore safely and there's not an MPA, get out there and look for structure/kelp, like any other ambush predator yellows key in on "barriers", or changes, whether it be in water color, current, or shadows. Fish use all of these things as ambush points, so focus on them and your odds of success improve drastically.

Thanks for info.
How far north do they come?
Are they only around in summer or other times of year?

DFG has determined we are going to have a horrible salmon season up here so seems a good year to come down and get at them.

La Jolla

Summer. Use boat launch by La Jolla shores hotel. Weekdays are best. I have caught them far north as Malibu but La Jolla is the hot spot. Come on down. The locals love it when they can get more company. More people fishing means more reports.

Thanks....
thinking of trying to get a few buddies to go. We go each year up to Shelter Cove in Humboldt....highly recommended if you want the hard corp north coast experience and salmon.

Nice! I made the trip up that way over Thanksgiving. Have some pictures of the trip here. Planned to hit up Shelter Cove, but a 25-30-foot surf forecast in that area meant that was a no-go. Would like to go out there and try again some day when conditions are better. When you decide what day you're heading down this way, drop a post! If I can't go that day myself, I'm sure there are plenty others here that would be stoked to link up and do some fishing
