Proposed CA Fishing Tackle Lead Ban

The California Sportfishing League (CSL) is warning anglers about Assembly Bill 2787, which aims to outlaw lead fishing weights of 1 3/4 ounce and lower. According to CSL, there is no evidence that lead fishing weights threaten California wildlife.

Alternative metals for sinkers cost 2 to 3 times as much, or more, so this could be a hit to the wallet if it passes. CSL is not alone in their opposition - CCA-California is also circulating petitions against the bill.

CSL is asking all California anglers to take action by April 2nd. The easiest way is to digitally sign the petition by visiting http://www.savefishing.com/stop-the-...-the-petition/.

Other ways to help include contacting your state assembly member and state senator, or by sending letters to the Assembly Environmental Safety & Toxic Materials Committee. Address them to:

Assembly Member Bill Quirk, Chair and Members of the Committee
1020 N Street, Room 171
Sacramento, California 95814
916.319.3965 phone
916.319.3950 fax

Consider cc'ing info@savefishing.org. CSL is collecting letters to share with the state legislature.

They need to concentrate on getting the lead out of their political system, and start concentrating on the real things that need done.

The weight of the lead in the political system is crushing us. The political parasites in Sacramento are probably emboldened by the $1.3 TRILLION omnibus spending bill that was just foisted upon us in D.C., sealed and signed mere days after being made public. The amount of dead weight, waste, incompetence and corruption in everything our bloated government does to us is beyond comprehension. They are incapable of managing themselves.

Have a nice day

Once we have been criminalized and lead weights are banned from stores, here are some solutions:

Make fishing weights from rocks:

Plastic Easter eggs are a nice shape for making bounce balls.
Find something tough like CementAll or anchor bolt glue, leftover construction glue, epoxy putty, etc. Mix in old fishing weights or chopped up lead scrap as aggregate. If your mixture sticks to the plastic egg shells, give them a smear of Vaseline, or axle grease.

It's not good form to bitch and moan about things without offering positive solutions.

Right? Right.

Signed. Lead comes from the soil, why is it a problem if we put it back there.

Thanks to everyone who has responded. I agree with Flounder, enough's enough. I recently attended a meeting in Sacramento, where the goal was to increase fishing license sales. It was hard to come up with any good solutions given all the barriers. A lead ban would be one more. I suppose I could see the point if it were proven to impact wildlife, but there are no studies that do so.

These “environmentalists” are probably buying stock in tungsten to get rich considering our new weights will cost ten times the $. Total joke. Show me the studies, show me the facts. Oh wait they can’t.

Well...there were lead weights on the tire that ran over and killed that raccoon that Mitchell skinned out....

Last time I went collecting lead tire weights

On my mountain bike I bought home a couple of pounds
I wonder how much a tungstun 8oz torpedo sinker cost.ill start making my own steel stinkers they might be a little bigger but when they rust they will look like kelp.

All I'm saying is it's worth thinking about.

Either we start to think of another solution, or we get lambasted by those "environmentalists" as destroying the water and we are caught without another option.

We should be a lot more concerned about plastic baits than we should lead weights....
