My favorite is a $50 Penn Jigmaster on a $50 Dan Hernandez rod both from Squidco. I've caught several 40+ lb WSB on that rig and it was manufactured in the USA. My second favorite is a Shimano TLD-15 on any rod. The TLD is so convenient because with the lever drag I can use it to troll fly-line, or with a 4oz slider or a heavier cannonball for bottom bouncing. I also like Diawa Sea-lines, I have a couple of the SL-X30SHA models and they work great.

can't go wrong with a Cal Star Rods matched w/ Shimano Trinidads or Calcutta reels.
if you buy higher end gear you will end up spending less in the long run. |

I prefer the Avets from the kayak because they are easily rebuilt when the elements take their toll. I think a lot of guys also like the Diawa sealines as well.

Daiwa Saltigas are the best reels I've ever used. Bulletproof and require almost no maintenance. Saltiga 40 on a 7ft bait rod that loads up quick will put you in the game against anything you'll find in southern california and baja.

I 100% agree with CaboJohn Calstar rods Shimanop Trinidads way to go. Little pricy but well worth it. Think big fish on little tackle. Spectra with topshot

I have a Trinidad 12 on a CalstarGF700ML 20-40. I've landed quality YT and My 140# Striped Marlin on that rig. If you want to go a little cheaper, go with the Avet SX 2 Speed on a Seeker Blacksteel. The SX is the Shiznit!

Buy at least some "Made in the USA" components to keep jobs here. Might be slightly more expensive but we are worth it.

Daiwa Sealine X 30 or 40, and an Ugly Stick Tiger works for me.
The $160 total investment is easy on the wallet too. |
