MDR - 5/29/17
Hit Marina Del Rey on Monday. Saw the marine layer was going to be present so I knew the pleasure boaters weren't. Tide was super low and water was moving. Perfect conditions for a fantastic day of fishing. I unload the boat, sit in the seat, reached for my paddle and.....F**K. Forgot the paddle at home. Reverse the process, and get back to the water an hour later. Not the best start to the day, but the patience and extra work paid off.
I paddled the west side of the channel and hit my usual spots looking for bass. I work my way out towards the break wall and hit the newly exposed beach. Nailed a legal Hali on a drop shot rig (I thought I hooked up on a monster bass.) After that I fought the current out to the inside of the break wall and hung out with the seals for a while. Pretty creepy water out there (was eerie still with almost no current.) The Calicos definitely like that area better than the channel, but it was a pain in the arse working through the barracudas to try and find them. Decent bite for a bit but as soon as the sun broke through the marine layer, it died. I decide to work my way back and didn't get another fish in the boat the rest of the day. Final fish count: 6 small Spots 1 small Calico 1 legal Calico 3 Barracuda (these guys are ANNOYING) 1 legal Halibut Besides having my first "lessons learned" in a while, and getting my thumb chewed by a 'cuda, it was an absolutely fantastic day. What a way to celebrate this amazing life we should all be grateful to live.... Last edited by goldenglory18; 07-18-2017 at 08:19 AM. Reason: Title update |

Great job! It's a great day when you can call barries annoying. I so need to get back on the water again. Sucks on the paddle thing. I've forgotten my PDF before and luckily had a spare in my trunk. Since I'm over an hour away from the ocean, I may toss a spare paddle in there too.

It really helps to have a bare minimum packing list saved on your phone and confirm it every time before you leave the house

I'm luck it was really early and I only live in WeHo. Any later in the day, or any farther away, I would have stayed home.... Quote:
Not a terrible idea for newer paddling anglers though. There is a lot of stuff that we WANT to bring out to fish but only three things we NEED to have (boat, paddle, PFD...) |
