LJ Offshore............not! 9/28
It would have been a killer day to paddle long, but making bait sucked the early morning away and 3 hours after launching 3 of us collectively had a handful of micro greenies and a few sardines. If tuna ate lizard fish we would have been golden.
i only managed a couple sardines in front of the pier, nothing but lizards in the pre-dawn under the light. Kurt offered me a mini mac and I had to downsize to a #2 hook to use it. Got bit around 8:30ish in 95 feet. Broke my losing streak and kept this cute lil fellar, skinny maybe 12 pounds.............dinner. Maybe next week offshore will be in the cards.

Stoked... that's perfect sashimi size. Bait has been tough through there... but the north side of scripps canyon has been pretty loaded with GB. Looked like epic conditions today.

Hey the way things have been lately, that is a great catch and perfect dinner size. Last few times out there bait has been very hard to catch not find. A few times I spent 7+ hours trolling 3 Spanish (not at the same time) because that was all I could catch. By the end of the day all had been released and none had been lost even to the seal lions. I had to go on a 3/4 day boat trip trough work to catch 1 rat Yellow Tail and 1 Yellowfin Tuna about 25lbs. It's been tough lately.

Double checking, those small light brown fish with short needle teeth, big head, kinda enemic: Those were lizard fish?
First time I've caught them on a sabiki before, thought they were some trash guppy or something, I thought I remembered reading about someone who caught lizardfish with mac/sardine and then used the lizard as bait, so I thought they would be a lot bigger. Can you actually catch something with them? I only caught one that was above 5 inches in size, but they seemed really low energy, I didn't think putting one on a dropper would be any more enticing than using dead bait... PS: Got skunked today personally, then again I only kept the macs for bait and didn't make them until 9:30, and the current kept pushing me back east. Good to know other people caught bait and fish with it, at least. |

trash guppy
Good name for them but they are supposedly great halibut bait since they run on the bottom or near it and are around the halibut, great bait for the slow days and bottom fishing, which seems like most days this year
