Slow Fishing... But... (video added)

Not many posts happening these days, so I thought I would share a fish from a few weeks back...

Sometimes when the fishing is slow, all it takes is a little shift of tactics or location to find a special opportunity. I made like 5 trips just trying for halis, and not a single shorty. I tried secret spots, not so secret spots, and damn crowded spots. Trap hooks, light line, lizard fish... all the recently debated methods endorsed by the Sewer halibut gurus, and the local mysto set.

Ended up that a reverse dropper green back on straight 50# mono, no trap, did the job. I metered this fish for several seconds before she lit up my smallish GB. Luckily I have watched enough Greg Andrew videos to have the 'but gaffing technique down. I've caught many big fish, but this one was something very special. I was screaming like a giddy little schoolgirl when I got the gameclip in her. 46# of the most beastly and delicious dinosaur the pacific ocean has to offer. Anyone doubt the weight? (:

That is a beast!!!!

You've proven that most of the time it's less about tactics and more about time on the water. Trap rig, no trap rig, floro, mono, doesnt matter...........if a fish is hungry it'll bite whatever you put in front of its mouth. I can only imagine the look on your face and the screams of joy when you finally had that thing on the clip.

Congrats on a solid catch.

P.S.

You do know that it's all downhill from here, right?

Congrats Chris, that thing is a beast. I am jealous.

Btw, I meter them all the time on slow drifts and/or when I have the downrigger down. They look just like any other fish mark, they just usually start by coming up off the bottom. It is a real pisser when you know they are there and they don't bite, or don't bite solid enough to release the clip though. Especially when they follow your bait for up to 10 minutes.
