Kelp Beds

Has anyone seen any healthy kelp beds to as far as Dana? I miss fishing the kelp bed for Sheephead.

The kelp is still there, it's just down deeper. I stumbled upon some big stringers at DP a few weeks ago that were lingering just below the surface. I assume when the tide is ripping that you might not see them at all. When I switched over to downscan on my sonar I realized the kelp was fairly dense down there.

Last time I was at the headlands kelp bed I used a Danielson to float a bait 30' down in 40' of water just skimming the top of the short kelp with out getting snagged up even once. So no, the kelp isn't too healthy right now.

A couple years of warm water and big swells last winter did a number on the kelp. Cant speak about Dana but LJ kelp had been severely reduced. Been fishing LJ consistently all year and last Sunday was the first time I actually saw some stringers. Not healthy looking at all. It's still there but the tops have been taken off and its not growing back. We get s couple of cold/normal years and it will recover. Mike
