Starting New Years right....
My son, on his first saltwater kayak trip gets a great score. We launched before sunrise on News Year Day. A cold start, but we dressed well.
We went on a tandem kayak, and I got one YT before sunrise, and he hooked up soon after, and landed a 4.5 foot leopard shark, we released, but it struggled mightily. All on squid. Soon after, he hooked and landed his first kayak YT, and we were on the beach by 9:15. Check out the awesome lake-like conditions! Talk about spoiled.... one trip, just a few hours fishing, and home with a 22 pound yt. He has caught many from power boats, but first kayak yt. I put a photo below of his personal best, at 28 pounds at about age 10. This kid can fish. (ps.... he is 6'1", so the fish was a biggish one) ps again... the surf is supposed to start getting really big this week. Only 3-4 foot Sunday, but up to 15 feet by Thursday, according to Surfline.com. Watch out. many years ago.... a happy, tired face... and a 28 pound YT he fought a long time. |

Once again awesome catch buddy jr. and what a great dad for taking him out.
All I got was a skunk but it was well worth it to see your son's first yak YT. OMG, that old photo is so awesome, what a huge smile. |

Thanks guys. For me, it is nice to have a new kayak fishing partner. Now he wants a new kayak! But we have two he will learn on for many trips first. Chris, thank for all the tips, and the WSB filets..... so sweet!
ps.... son Gavin is the 2015 California Youth Bass Fishing Champion, and we got to go to the US championships in Arkansas in August, all paid for. I'm trying to convert him to saltwater from lakes. Lakes are fun, but nothing pulls like a YT or big fish from a kayak! If any of you have young kids, or grandkids, you may want to put together a photo album website like I did. It is very cool. http://fishingwiththekids.com/photos.htm Anyone want tips on doing this, just send a message to me. For me, this is priceless. Cheers all! |
