Bay Bass...
Hello,
Well I finally get to put my new PA 14 in the water for the first time this coming Thursday. I plan on fishing the bay, just a relaxing day off from work. Any ideas of plastic to use or particular places in the bay to go or other ideas would be great. Thanks, Joe |

Mission bay or San Diego bay?
My advice, find the eel grass and you'll find the spotties. Try figuring out where the edges of the grass is to get hits from the halis, bass and whatever else is trying to ambush at the edge. |

Dropshot Gulp Swimming Mullets in Pearl White. 10" tag end (this is very important that it is short like that), 1oz weight, 1/0 worm hook. This is my go to in the bay. Last trip i caught over 40 spotties and 10 halibut in a 4 hr session. Just work it real slow along the bottom, no jerking or anything else needed, just reel slow. I also usually cast or troll a kkrockadile and get me some mackerel to soak on my live bait rod (for halibut) while I'm working the Gulp.
There is a nice beach to launch from at Shelter Island, from there I like to fish the pillars on the military side. There is a sharp drop off along those pillars that hold a lot of bass, halibut and sculpin. Drop off goes from the 6-8ft rang to around 40'. Fish that and you'll get them... |

Buy some zman plastics they can last for over 40 fish without getting torn up. I like the paddlerz and jerk shadz in 4 and 5 inches.
Use a weedless setup such as a texas rig up to 1 oz. Also use a owner sled head weedless jighead. Swim jig heads are also good with skirts on them. Like others have said work the bottom and go very slowly. |

For tournaments we launch the kayak fleet from the beach just to the right of the boat launch on Shelter Island. Lots of grass right in the moorings in front of there.
