legal size is whatever size you deem edible. no point in keeping a 6" rockfish if it takes more calories to clean/prep/cook compared to how much meat you get.
that being said, take note of which rockfish can be kept versus must be released. Also know the quantity limit of various fish (lingcod, boccacio, etc). And try to practice releasing rockfish that go belly-up. I usually put the sinker of my rig into the fish's mouth. slowly drop it down 50ish feet, then pull up fast to yank the sinker out of its mouth. Doesnt always work though.
