Hey Bcross...grab a drink, set aside and hour or so and search BWE threads with key words that might help you shortcut your process. You talking San Diego County? If yes, you gotta narrow it down further...La Jolla, Mission Beach or Pt Loma (and several other locations w kelp and canyons). If you're already to this point and know where you want to try, be daring and throw out a "mind if I tag along" thread or PM. Also watch other posts as there are regular open invites put out and take advantage of it. I have met MANY good dudes this way while also stealing their dope...
Be safe, have enough experience to not drag down someone else's trip and don't try and learn it all in one day. Enjoy the experience...or just call "the man"...he goes by Darkhorse. Jim |

Typically bait is pretty reliable at the pier, especially in the dark or gray. When the area off blacks beach was open the pier was my go to spot. But around the kelp beds bait can be any where. With a meter you can find bait schools all along the kelp and out from it. With out a meter use your eyes. Bait shows on the surface. And under birds. You can find it. It's absolutely not a secret, over the years one of the most reliable, and convenient, places to make bait is right passed the reserve buoy. Mike

It's obvious you're talking about la jolla. The pier is good for bait if u can't make it off the kelp paddies. Typically most try to make bait off the paddies, then the pier is always a solid second bet. You're question is legit. Don't mind the rest of the bs everyone will give you.

Speaking of the pier... Are you allowed to fish around the pier? Twice I was told to move away via speakers from whomever was on the pier.
I got pretty close but didn't think it was an issue. |

Actually it's a legit question to ask where he's referring to. Lots of people make bait at crystal pier before heading out to the grounds. People also make bait around the bouy and balboa pier before fishing the Delmar kelp or the canyon. You can also hit up Oceanside pier before fishing the kelp and Carlsbad canyon. You can make bait around the pier in Dana and hit the kelp and canyon/drop off there. But I guess since LJ is the first place all the new guys go you could assume it's where he would be asking about.
I'm just saying... You can catch bait at the pier but I'm pretty sure it's limited to fin bait. So if you run into a squid bed you'll have to pass them up. I always preferred to make bait at the kelp. More times than not they are easy to find, especially if you have a fish finder.
