Had a little too much fun last night so I was later than usual launching. Launch was packed this morning. Looked like the morning of a tournament . Bait was scarce and micro at the pier so I headed to the kelp to pick up some spanish. Made bait, handed a couple off and slowly headed outside. Pretty thick with cudas which gave me a bit of hope that yellows were mixed in. Pretty slow for us using mackerel. Dogs did as much damage as the cudas did. Had one hell of a heartbreaker though. Flyline went off an ran right into the bull kelp west of the outer kelp in about 95' of water. Long story short, 25 lb mono doesn't saw through kelp. Lost the fish (not going to make a guess as to species ), and had to cut about 75' of frayed line. I guess my plan to avoid knothead by not using spectra backfired. You live, you learn. With my ego deflated and hopes dashed, I headed in. Did see some nice beaver at the launch though. Not my story to tell... Off the water by noon.

Hey Nathan,
I was out there today to. No problem with bait straight out in front of the launch with nice size macks but fought the darn sea lions and a very aggressive harbor seal! No luck for me out there other than bait but what a beautiful day on the water! Ran into Sherm out there and paddled in for the day. Will try again next Sunday! Pics are of the launch with glass conditions and quiet for me and then of the yak attack when I left at 11:30! Also one of Sherm after landing. |

Nice fishing with you Nathan. Slow day all around yesterday. Did manage a large sculpin when I stopped to take a leak and the weighted line touched bottom. There is always next time.

sunday was the same thing for us. no yellows to be seen in the area and lots of cudas hopefully make it out in the middle of the week. is there any other spots to launch from the area to hit up la jolla. starting to hate the traffic around late in the mornings.
