LJ 8/10
Launched from LJ shores around 6-6:30.
Spanish macks were easy to find, green mack, not so much. I did bring two jr. bonito in on the same sabiki with one spanish mack. I let those two go. I the end, I keet 3 legal Calicos, a Yellowfin Rockfish, and two huge green mackerel (one caught near the bottom while targeting rockfish). (In the pics those aren't short Calicos, they just look small compared to the mega macks). I had another mega mack that I trolled (even though it wasn't very lively by the time I got it unhooked). Something hit it like a train, and my line broke off at the hook when I set it (15lb test with improved cinch knot). If anyone catches a YT with a 3/0 VMC hook in it, it's mine. I tossed back some short calicos and a small barracuda, too. A great day on the water... |

Nice report.
Because it's so new, and some don't know it yet, 14" is the minimum on ALL bass, and you can only keep 5 total in any combination.

Nice report, and just a suggestion, you probably want to bump up your line size to at least 25 when trolling those big mackerel around.

Those calicos are all 14 inches and change.
In retrospect, I clearly need to think about some heavier leader. Or I should have just tied the hook directly to the main line (which was 25 lb. on that reel).

I don't doubt you. I mention it just to make others aware. Nothing would ruin a day like a ticket for being ignorant of the changed law. BTW, 15lb IS awfully light for big greenies.

Try a Palomar knot next time, I have had way too many clinch knots (improved or not) fail.
