Lightening strikes North County....twice
I went out Sunday off Cardiff to try and catch a yellowtail. I was having no luck, and staring at La Jolla wishing I had gone there instead. All of a sudden a lightening bolt hits right at the Shores. First thing through my mind was those boys are in trouble. Within 15 minutes the storm had moved north and completely surrounded me. Other than idiots in power boats, not too much worries me on the water. However, having lightening strikes all around me was unnerving. The closer you got to shore the worse it got. Finally I just put my rods flat laid out in my Outback till it stopped.

You know you spend too much time on BWE when you look down and see a big halibut coming up and all of Greg Andrews videos start playing in your mind. http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwevb/a...1&d=1406705100 http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwevb/a...1&d=1406705100 Lucky me--Ansel Adams was on the beach taking a selfie of his new gloves, and I happened to get in the photo with my fish. http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwevb/a...1&d=1406705100 |

It is always a good idea to have something on your mind other than "Oh my God, Oh my God, Oh my God"

Metal Rods
Unless your fishing rods are metal I don't think their position would matter relevant to a lightning strike. The kayak is an insulator as well. I would still be scared though!

Graphite is a very good conductor and would make a good lightning rod. Although the kayak by itself is a good insulator, lightning is usually accompanied by rain, and rain conducts electricity well. Very nice fish btw f'n!
