fly fishing
I've been intrigued with fly fishing for quite some time. I recently picked up a fly setup and was kinda wondering the next step. I picked up an 9' 8 weight 4 piece temple fork rod paired with a hardy uniqua 7/8 reel. Right now it's spooled with floating line with a floro leader, no tippet. I've got a few large flies like a ghost shrimp and a popper, couple others. I'd like to do some surf fishing with this setup buti figure I will probably need sinking line to avoid my line being pushed back in from the waves. Any tips you guys could suggest would be great

Awesome. Sounds like a good start. I would suggest a sinking line something like a rio outbound short (intermediate sinking) I usually run straight fluro. Use a more elliptical casting motion with heavy weighted flies. I use my fly gear on beaches and bays. It challenging and rewarding. If your in SD if schedules permitted could pass some tips. Cheers,

Talk to the guys at ScSurfishing.com , really cool guys over there. They are really helpful and they have a bunch of articles on how to surf fish in general.

Get or make a chest basket, for holding your stripped (sp) line. Such a pain having your line around your ankles and legs in the surge. Bust out the fly rod on the macs, those horse macs will pull some line.
For surf fishing, look for the trenches and holes. It's been a while since I've tied, but the perch always hit small flies with chenille, marabou and crystal flash. Red or orange bellies on the flies were hot tickets. |

I've been thinking about trying fly fishing for years! Does anyone know any local clubs that gives basic fly fishing seminars?

yeah i've been interested for years but really dont have a clue where to start. Maybe before or after your tourney someone could host a half hour seminar or sometime.

FFY btw: I'd be interested. Due to where I live I'd love to stay down there a couple days or a week. Last edited by FlyFishinYakr; 06-23-2014 at 07:05 PM. Reason: Supplement |

Mike once you get yakDout dialed in, bring him along on our GONZAGA on the FLY trip in October.
Fishing MD, I would be in for your Flies Only ideas.

Raskal if you've got a rod already I'll teach you the ropes or I can bring mine. I used to do a ton of blue water flyfishing and flats fishing in Florida. Still trying to figure out the Cali fishing situation but casting/rigging/fly tying I can help out.
