What kind of paint did you use and is it going to eventually go back into the water as it wears out?

Anybody brave enough to spray on a schooling bait pattern on the bottom of their hull?

Hey Chris I have this great idea for a new paint job on your yak! You'll never guess what it is! I guarantee you'll get bit more when OTW.

Cool! Like how you integrated the skull and bones into the stripes.

Not Me! I don't know if anyone remembers the guy that died after having his leg bit off by a Shark off Hawaii, people thought he had a stringer of fish over the side and his legs were in the water. The thing that I remember was seeing a picture of his Kayak and it had a very nice airbrushed scene on the hull of Yellowtails, Whahoos, etc. When I saw that I thought WTF would you do that for. I guess it attracted the wrong kind of eyes.

Buddha & 5-20 - I wiped the surface with acetone, then alcohol before spraying. I used the "fusion" paint... but learned that the standard spray paint lasts just as long. As far as the paint chipping and scratching off goes, well that's just the way it is. I'll do touch ups maybe a couple times a year. What I've learned from another kayak fisherman who enjoys painting his kayaks (W. Wade Nichols) - "I always tell anyone that asks about painting their kayak that the first step in the process is to make yourself okay with the fact that all your artistic effort and hard work IS GOING TO get scratched off and ruined." That's just how it is with polyethylene/rotomold kayaks - nothing seems to adhere very well and again you've got to be okay that.
Thanks everyone for the compliments! Last edited by spudz; 06-02-2014 at 02:14 PM. |
