Rockfish 101, Gabes Way...
La Jolla has become more fun than ever
since Gabe and I have refined our approach for catching rockfish. At the last Rockfish Tourney, after making it thru the Kill Zone, our 4 man team totally limited out, with 3rd and 4th place finishers. We were stoked. (And still believe Steveeo cheated!) It started last fall. Since we use Fish Finders and GPS, we started by storing lobster buoy spots. Then, after doing some research, we cranked up the sensitivity on the fish finders and started looking for small specs on the ocean floor, usually over structure. We only fished deeper waters, 130-150'. And bingo: Quality Rockfish. What kind of rigs? What kind of bait? Lures or Feathers? One hook or two?? Well I can't spill the beans completely. Because the learning curve is the funnest part. Ask us on the water. But I will tell you this. Without a Fish Finder and GPS, in deep waters you won't find any spots, and if you do, you won't stay on them without a GPS. So unless you're happy relying on the seasonal lobster buoys or kelp stringers, you need good electronics. My new name for Gabe is "Ling King". |

Nice report Yani.
Looks like it's time for a filet table. My knees hurt just looking at that last photo. |
