The Pipe, 4-29-14

Landwhale and I launched at the ramp a little after 5:30. Water was a cold 57.5º and there was a cold offshore wind blowing. When we got on the Pipe it was blowing enough for small white caps and wind chop that was really annoying. By 7:30 it had died down to a breeze and made for a good drift along the pipe. Then about 8:30 the wind went onshore. Then it backed off. Then about 9:00 it started blowing out of the south east really hard. I had to be off the water by 10:00 anyways, so at 9:20 we headed in.

While I tried quite a few different colors, only the 4" Flurry in Greenback got fish. I finished w/5 legals (all over 2lbs) and 5 shorts. All but one short calico were sand bass. I think if the wind hadn't have been blowing so hard we could have had a good bite. As it was most of the morning it was taking 1oz heads to find the bottom, and even then staying on the bottom wasn't an option.

It was fun and I look forward to seeing what next week has in store for us.

I tried yesterday but it was like a river out in front of Doheny. After seeing two raked baits I tail hooked a live anchovy for my only fish. Barley legal halibut. When he bit I was in the surf danger zone with a set rolling in. I didn't even have time to turn around, back paddled as hard as I could and just made past the set. Grabbed my pole to see if the fish was on the line and it was..I might be out there tomorrow it looked good at 7 pm tonight.

Glad you made it through. Watch out for the winds if you go out tonight. It's blowing pretty good in Lake Forest right now.
