Zach Likes to Fish
My 6 year old son Zach got a fishing kayak from Santa this year. He has been out fishing 3 times so far, in winter.
This came home in his first grade homework packet the other day ... I guess he likes it .... He is up to 6 fish and three species of fish. His nicest fish to date ... He is super confident now .. He even got to see something really really cool .......... When we were out, a man kayaked over to us and asked if we could help his son who was float tubing land his fish that had been on for 20 minutes. I said, wow it must be a huge halibut. I took out my very large net and waited to see color. When I did, I put the huge net in the water under the fishes tail and said to the man, my net is waay too small and grabbed my gaff. I asked if they wanted to do it and they told me to go for it. I explained that there was a chance I could lose it in the gaff attempt, and they said go ahead. Well I popped it, and got a game clip on it in one motion. I have heard stories about the explosive nature of these fish, so I put another game clip on it. Bought it shore and it measured out at 47 " 33 pounds. Caught on 12 pound test! Very nice Trophy Fish. I know it is bad form to post another persons, fish, but all of this happened right in front of my six year old. This was the largest fish I have ever seen caught in front of me and my son saw it all. Now all he can talk about is going out to catch his own 47 " Halibut ....... My 3 1/2 year old is very tall for her age and I've been contemplating getting her her own mini X as well. Great job introducing your son to what will be a lifetime of awesome memories.
Question, where did you put the gaff shot? Don't see any holes

Well the gaff shot lol, you can see it on the other side in the head. My friend told me after the fact that I should NOT have gaffed it in the head because of the large bones there. When I gaffed it, it was one motion and brought it up enough to slap the first game clip on it. I have always heard that this size can freak out, thus the second game clip. You know what, my bad gaff must have killed it with a brain shot as it never moved after the gaff, lol..... Last edited by ctfphoto; 01-31-2014 at 02:50 PM. |

Well we only caught one huge lizard fish which we used for hali bait, but no takers. We did not try for spotties.
It was windy with 14 mph winds which made fishing hard. Realized for the first time in 2 1/2 years of kayak fishing that I needed an anchor. Think I will build one. So here is our catch for the day ..... |

Right on dude. My dad started me fishing while I was young and I've been fishing ever since. I started my son (and daughter) fishing when he was about 3 at the local lakes for bluegill and perch and he's been fishing ever since. I can out fish my dad any day, and my son can out fish me any day.
I love to see kids fishing because I know it can turn into a lifelong hobby and it leaves us with some great memories as well. Plenty of good times ahead for sure! I wish there was such a thing as kayak fishing back then.

Exactly, my dad started me stream fishing in the High Sierras for trout when I was very young. Did a lot of trout fishing in my teenage years. I got so good that I stopped trout fishing as I felt bad for all the fish I was catching. Found ocean fishing and fish it hard until I got burnt out. Two and a half years ago I found Kayak Fishing and I now go at least once a week. Can't get enough as it is so much fun. I too wish they had fishing kayaks when I was 6 years old The key is to keep it fun. |
