LJ 15/16

Tuesday met a buddy at 2:15am at my house and we shot down to LJ. We are OTW by 5am....easy surf, a little eerie in the dark-- but easy. We paddle out to the pier-- on the way we get a dolphin escort. Make bait and by we are on our way to the fishing grounds. In shallow, I get a nice hit, and pull up a 5# calico. Not what I was hoping for. We paddle out to the kelp where there is already a kayak armada. Other than sea lions steeling baits and snags on the bottom-- uneventful for us despite our marathan paddles EVERYWHERE! 2 spear fisherman land wsb over 35#. I didn't hear of any fish landed for the kayakers. Water was dirty brown (darn red tide!), weather was cool and overcast, wind was a no show until the afternoon. Nice exercise for the day.
I decided since I was working in San Diego on wednesday, and the gear was ready to go-- I did a back to back visit. Left the house at 2:45am and OTW by 5:15am. Conditions similar as day before. On our way out-- jimbofish caught a small thresher==> maybe 40-50#....after a few pics, it self-released. At the grounds-- again an armada-- and no action. After 10am-- 2 WSB were landed. A couple of yellows were landed one early and one after 10am. Both were 10# (or less) class fish. I did hear of another small thresher caught early-- but that was it. I am planning on getting back to LJ in a couple weeks. Maybe my wsb is still waiting. Nice seeing you again Jimbo and Gary.
Always nice to get out...until next time!

Jas-
Good to see ya again- Sure wish I could have saved my Yozuri on the "self release" thresher. Lost another Yozuri to another "T" later on as well.

Your not kiddin' about the algae bloom/red water; I'm surprised anything was caught today! Although there was one young man who was extremely happy out there today. Picked up his first YT from a yak, and then about an hour later, picked up a WSB on a mac rapala. Can only assume it was his first as well.

Sending ya a PM for the pics- Thanks for the photo's and stickin' with me 'till Mr. T went bye bye- Jimbo-

F'n Troopers, man.. I spoke to Al, and he leaves his house at 0100. Launched at 0430. 1fters, stiff S wind, lowtide, biolum., water temp 61-62, water vis. 5-10ft (murky). Headed to the pier and made small spanish, with Vito. Headed out a little further and found nice greenies. A little after greylight headed to the fishing grounds. Half way there I get a call from Spooky007, saying that he got a thresher. I head overthere and snap a couple of "bendo" pics, and watch him fight it for awhile. Trolled around with greenies for nada. I came across another guy as I was coming in, and handed off the last of my greenbacks to him. Found some flat ground on the way in, and dropped down a pin-sized spanish. I get picked up, then heavy weight.. Then slack. Paddled in and saw Tobey at the launch. We chat for awhile, and watch some fish brought in. Nice seeing you, Tobey and Al..

Hey, anyone notice the bouy's closer in the reserve? I spoke to diver, who said that the canyon collapsed. And, maybe that's why the bouy's have been moved in. Also more fish coming through?! Anyone know?

The canyon collapsed...? Interesting. No, I believe the buoys were installed in the same locations as they have been in the past. They're anchored by engine blocks which tend to drift a bit over time. The thinking behind the new lower profile ecological buoys is that they will hopefully drift less. The company I work for has been putting the buoys in place for the last 10 or so years.

Thanks. I just remember the bouy's used to be placed a little east of Alligator Head (near the stairs going down to the beach)... Now they look like they are west of the caves. Is it also true that they put 700lb anchors on them? Let's hope they don't move again...
