rigging

If I want to get my line below the surface, is the preferred method putting on a 1oz sliding egg sinker, like the carolina rig with a 2 ft leader?
Thanks in advance

are you trolling a low line, or drift fishing the bottom?

For trolling I use a plastic halibut slider, kept off the hook by a swivel with about 3-5' of leader. Then I can attach different torpedo weights for different situations without having to retie anything. Usually I use 2 oz for slow trolling a mac. A torpedo sinker inline also works fine, but to change weights you have to retie.

Chris got the pic right. I couldn't find a pic of mine. They are cheap plastic things. At Squidco you get 2 for less than a buck. Mine are cheap plastic, with weak snaps. I like it that way. If I snag the weight the plastic or snap breaks before my line.

In winter I use those sliders since you can easily swap off weights if you want to fish the bottom. In summer I use a 2-3oz egg with a 3-4ft fluoro leader. The carolina setup slides through kelp a little better.
