Where to launch in Newport

Hey Guys,

Taking my son to Newport to fish the kelp, where's the best place to launch? Also, is the new bait barge close by?

Thanks,

Josh

If you're talking about fishing the kelp beds just outside of Newport Harbor that would be Corona Del Mar.

The Coast Guard Station is one of the closest places to the mouth of N.H. (that I know of) When I hit CDM thats where I launch from.

Coast Guard Station 1911 Bayside Drive, Newport Beach, CA. There are restrooms and showers on site. There is a small concrete path that will drop you only a few yards from the water.

The bait barge is in the middle of the channel leading out of Newport Harbor, smack dab in the middle (mostly).

Hope it helps.

Parking can be a bit tricky. If you're going with someone else, then just drop all your gear and yak off at the water, then go park on the street somewhere.. unless you get lucky or get there really early. Head out the jetty, you'll pass the bait barge. Once you're out the jetty channel, turn left and the Corona del Mar kelp should be right there. Good luck.

I have to agree with everyone else. Coast Guard station should be best. I launch at a closer location, only issue is the hill to get down. Or better yet, you can beach launch at little corona state beach, kinda hard now with the swell building.

I would definitely recommend getting to the coast guard station nice and early 0500-0530 then prep and wait till 0600 to leave the vic. It gets packed early on the weekends not sure about weekdays. Ill be there on sat so looking forward to hearing your report. and tight lines
