Thoughts on fishing Carlsbad kelp tomorrow
I've never fished in my own backyard! I've lived in Carlsbad to 15 years and yak fished for 6, and have never fished local. I'd like to give it a shot in the morning. The surf is small by the power plant and it looks very tempting.
If anyone wants to go out or can lend some advice it would be welcome. I'm thinking that halibut may be a target species as well as calico or sand bass. The surf is so small you could hang out and cast into the surf zone. Good luck if you're going out Friday. ![]() |

I lived and worked in cbad for several years and fished all over that area. I never caught a yt or sb there but have caught plenty of bass and few halibut. There is good kelp and structure all over; from the Army and Navy accademy down to the Bataquitos Lagoon mouth. Maybe fish the outside edges of the kelpin a it deeper water for the bass this time of year. In the summer fish around the grunnion runs.
Good luck. Mike |
