rockfish out of NPH
met up with Matt to go hunt for some rockfish outside of NPH. i took him to a nice little structure spot that had WFO white croakers. afterwards, he took me to the rockfish spot, and after we dialed in on the current and wind conditions, we started to slay. probably over 60 rockfish between the 2 of us. Matt got the 2 largest fish (3lbs copper, and 2.5lbs copper). and i was putting a hurting on the reds. called it a day at 3pm

Thanks for the report and nice job on the rockies! Without giving up #'s, about how far out did you guys go and what depth? I plan on doing a recon trip of newport canyon soon looking for big reds. I have a feeling decent sized reds can be found in less than 200' just outside the harbor, hopefully like you guys did. Congrats on a great day!
Saw a couple of yakers by the docks yesterday, so I snapped this pick just in case they were on BWE. I was on a skiff for a couple of hours and got 8 bass. The bite is picking up in the harbor. |

NPH is full of macs and bait right now, the key to getting bass and not macs is to stay on or near the bottom. If you're looking for edible bass, I suggest you leave the harbor for cleaner waters.

jey j3ffro, i think i saw you and your buddies in the morning when i launched. i remember seeing a grey malibu x-factor (with an owner sticker, it used to be my buddy's yak) lol. i was the one carrying my yellow yak to M street when a group of guys were launching. i was going to ask them to join us but they took off to fast.
rockfish are everywhere outside of NPH, go to 180-200ft. any deeper and there is nothing. any more shallow and its a mix of random stuff. we fished about 1/2 mile length and were hooking up RF everywhere. it was just hard to weed out the little guys from the bigger models.
