Newport, 1-10-12
Fished one of my least favorite winter spots yesterday with Landwhale. We launched at about 5:30 after a brief conversation with the Newport PD. I thought for sure they'd give us grief about launching so early, but they didn't. They just wanted to make sure we weren't up to no good. Water was 58º with decent clarity. Air was cool with almost no wind. I actually got cold a little after sunrise when the wind blew offshore for a bit.
We did a quick drift in an area I like for sandies, but it didn't produce a bite. We moved over to an area Steve got some fish in recently and got a decent pick going. The bite died about an hour after sunrise and the rest of the morning was really really slow. Steve had forgot his seat so his back was hurting, I was over the slow fishing and we were off the water by 9:00. I finished the morning with 6 sandies (1 legal) and a spottie (short). Steve had about the same, but he had mostly spotties and calicoes (yeah they were lost). My spottie ate a texas rigged 3" Scampi in rootbeer/gold flake. The rest were ate the 3" Flurry. Halloween, Avocado/Chartreuse, and spoiled rotten all got fish. All had a bit of Hot Sauce for flavor of course. All things considered it was a fun morning, but I look forward to spring when the real fishing starts again.
