Launching from MB to LJ
Anybody try launching from Mission Bay to fish the La Jolla Kelp?
Am thinking of launching from Dana Landing, out the channel, up PB, to fish the south LJ kelp beds. Anyone tried doing that before and how was it? I imagine you gotta time the tides to get out the channel with the outgoing tide, and back in with the incoming. How is the trek compared to launching from Ave de la playa? When I fish at Crystal Pier, I sometimes see kayaks coming from the bay to the pier. It didn't look very far from the pier to the kelp or from pier to channel. How doable is that? |

I strongly recommend going and looking at how far that trek is in person.

I used to launch from the lifeguard station in Guiverra Basin. I did that for almost 8 months, until Adi told be about Avenida de Playa back in 2005 or so.
It is a long Paddle, but doable. I even caught some fish along the way! North LaJolla is great but the south kelp holds fish too. The closures will greatly increase the travel distance to the grounds though... I used to "sleep paddle" most of the way up. The tide can make a long day really bad if wind accompanies it. But usually is not too bad. An I-pod is almost mandatory. |

Paddle n Fish
That's what we called it years ago, Paddle n Fish.
The First of many... Bunch of guys launched from LJ with the paddle to MB and afterwards, beverages and a BBQ. Watched a buddy land a HUGE lingosaurus, 29 1/2"...unfortunately, they had to be 30" at that time... Same trip another buddy landed a YT. Fun trip, easy paddle, maybe it should be resurrected?
