Rotator Cuff Tear...
After countless hours paddling, I think I may have done it..
![]() I haven't gotten the official MRI yet, but the searing pain emanating from within my right arm socket is a direct indicator im afraid could lead to the sale of my beloved Prowler...Can anyone describe their symptoms if you have encountered the same tear?..

Tore my left rotator cuff. It stings really bad in one particular direction of movement. Weakness in that direction, loss in strength in the direction the tear occurs either pushing or pulling. Doesn't sound good Wade.

I've had my left shoulder surgically repaired twice. The symptoms common with both tears were.
-Pain with range of motion -Pain with bearing of weight -Popping sensation with movement of arm forward and back (I had to keep my hand in my pocket while walking to avoid this) -Pain while sleeping due to shoulder realignment while lying for prolonged time My first surgery was in 2000, and the MD recommended paddling excercises for therapy. I added the fishing pole myself ![]() Good luck on your results |

I had three repairs. Two on my right and one on my left. I'll fill you in on what I went thru when we hookup for the wraps.

Pain
.... Pain ... .... Lingering pain I've got a tear in my shoulder right now. Depending on the degree of the tear, meds and rest could get you over the hump, but if I know you... that won't work. Only your Doctor can tell you what to do based on exam. If you go in for an exam, they will probably start you off with Xrays (usually doesn't show anything). Try to request an "MRI with Contrast (Dye)". This is the best method to show tears. Your young enough, the Dr may recommend surgery. When your around your 50's, it's a different story and the side effects of the surgery are not so nice - that is why I have gone the Hobie route. I have also had to limit some activities. Example - Racquetball with my 25 yr old son I place my shots instead of slamming it, hoopin - not so sure how I'll do this year - one night of hoopin turns into 2 days of ice on the shoulder. Even a 12 hour day of fishing on the Hobie brings pain just due to the fishing portion ![]() Good luck to ya! |

You can't be sure it's a tear until the doctor checks it out. For years I have had a lot of extreme shoulder pain (yeah, I'm working on my seventh decade of life) due to overuse which causes swelling in the shoulder joint. A shot of steroids fixes this up within hours. If this is the case, learning a new paddling technique may surprise you as to how well you feel at the end of the day.
When I started kayaking I thought this wasn't going to work until I learned how to paddle like they do in ocean kayaks. It took awhile to for it to feel natural, but now I no longer have shoulder problems even after padding all day. It takes some practice for it to feel natural, but before you know it you'll never go back to using your arms only. Check it out, it may help you out. The tutorial is a animated video step by step. hopefully it is just some rotator cuff tendonitis......MRI is the key to ruling out a tear......rotator cuff tendonitis is treated with rest, anti-inflammatories, and sometimes steroid injections into the joint......some people have arthritic changes to the underside of the acromion process that makes them more suseptible to rotator cuff tendonitis and or rotator cuff tears due to the arthritic changes impinging on the rotator cuff that slides under the acromion process......have it shaved down arthroscopically and the problem improves and/or goes away......if torn rotator cuff have it repaired........and buy a Hobie when you can.....just .02 from an ER guy
hope it feels better soon ![]()

man that sucks if it is a torn. paddling technique definitely can help, use your core/legs, your arms are there just to guide the paddle. Maybe a different type paddle could help resolve the pain. Look at greenland paddle. looks really weird but my dad had shoulder problems, he is a avid kayak surfer and he uses one for surfing and ocean kayaking and he doesn't have issues.

I have had suspected tears in both my right and left. Last one was left arm and took a year of self therapy to heal. Alternating hot and cold on it. Ibuprofin for the swelling and pain. Searing pain with the wrong angle of movement as well as fast movements. Loss of sleep! Could not raise my hand much above my head and could not use that arm to wipe my .........nose. Paddling felt like I had hit the wall, very weak muscle. I am 99% as I feel what I would guess is scar tissue.

Next the Knees
Bummer.
It might heal over time? Any ways--the peddle yaks may come with their own problems. For me: Knee pain was number 1. Oh yes. Number 2: back pain, if you cannot swap in a better seat. It sucks getting old. |

Something must be wrong with the medical report. It says you attempted to skateboard off of a 2-story building......
